Repeaters

The Vienna Wireless Society runs and maintains two repeaters.

146.685(-) Located in Vienna, Virginia

448.375(-) Located at Fair Oaks Hospital

The Vienna Wireless Society operates two FM repeaters. A 2-meter repeater is located in the Town of Vienna and provides coverage within a 6 to 10 mile radius from mobile rigs (25 to 50 watts and unity-gain antenna). Hand held rigs, HTs, (1 to 5 watts and a rubber ducky antenna) can reach this repeater from about 1 to 3 miles. A 70-cm repeater is located at the Fair Oaks Hospital, roughly a mile north of the intersection of US 50 and Interstate 66. This repeater provides good coverage to the south, west, and north but, unfortunately, not good coverage to the east. Mobile rigs can reach this repeater from western, high elevation portions of Vienna. Other parts of Vienna do not reach it. To the south west, spotty coverage (hill tops with no intervening ridges) extends as far as Warrenton. No PL (CTCSS) tone is needed to access the repeater but a 67Hz PL tone is impressed on the transmitted signal so users who have equipment capable of decoding PL can avoid hearing other signals (other repeaters) on the repeater output frequency. Its effective radiated power (ERP) is 100 watts and its center of radiation is about 75 feet above ground level, ground level being 400 feet above mean sea level.

The frequency of the 2-meter repeater is 146.685 MHz with negative offset, i.e. it receives on 146.085 and transmits on 146.685.

Bernie, K4XY, has taken a number of photos of our 2-meter repeater.

The frequency of the 70-cm repeater is 448.375 MHz with a negative 5 MHz offset, i.e. it receives on 443.375 and transmits on 448.375. No PL tone is used. Its ERP is nominally 400 watts. Its center of radiation is about 75 feet above ground level, ground level being 450 feet above mean sea level.

Bernie, K4XY, has taken a number of photos of our UHF repeater.

In times of emergency, both repeaters are available for emergency communications. At all other times the repeaters are available for normal amateur use. On Monday nights at 8:00 Eastern Time the 2-meter repeater is used for an informal net that focuses on technical issues. All amateurs are invited to participate in this net and to use the repeaters whenever you want to. We encourage you to become a member, but it isn't necessary to be a member of the Vienna Wireless Society to use the repeaters. The repeaters are open to use by all radio amateurs.
