The Vienna Wireless Society General Membership Meeting – September 25, 2009

 

President Jim, W4JTP formally opened the meeting at 7:40 pm

 

TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 32

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

  • Bob, AJ4RS:
    • reminded the Membership about the Sunday, October 25 Marine Corps Marathon.  For more detailed information, click on  http://www.marinemarathon.com/page11.aspx  
    • announced the need for amateur radio volunteers for the Sunday, November 8, Vienna Turkey Trot Race.  Volunteers will be able to use their 2-m HT’s.  For further information about the event click on http://www.viennaturkeytrot.com/
    • announced the recent Open House of the new McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center (MPSTOC) for Fairfax County ARES.  For additional information go to http://sites.google.com/site/fairfaxcountyares/Home

 

  • Pete, KG4OJT:
    • reminded the Membership about the Club’s participation in Vienna’s annual Halloween Parade on October 28 when the Club will provide support as in previous years.

 

  • John, AF4PD:

o       updated the Membership about recent VWS Repeater maintenance work.  Both repeaters are working well but the recently installed voter is still exhibiting some technical difficulties that the Club’s Repeater Group will need to be resolve.

 

  • Pete, K6BFA:
    • reminded the Members that he is accepting additional QSL cards for the Club’s QSL chart that will be used at public functions.

 

  • Lee, KD4RE:
    • asked for volunteers to help him pick up the amateur radio gear from silent key Chester Summit’s estate on Saturday, September 26, 2009. 

 

BREAK:

 

  • The 50/50 Contest winner was Pete, K6BFA
  • Food was provided by John, KA4YMA

 

MEETING PRESENTATION – Ham Radio on a Budget

 

  • Kevin, N4KL gave a PowerPoint presentation on the history of some of the more notable tranceivers that hams used from the 1970’s on.  He discussed possible purchases of used rigs in the $300, $500 and $1,000 ranges that new operators might consider when choosing their first station.  Kevin’s humorous presentation was fun and informative and stimulated active participation from the audience.

 

President Jim, W4JTP formally adjourned the meeting after the presentation.
