The Vienna Wireless Society General Membership Meeting – June 12, 2009

 

President Jim, W4JTP formally opened the meeting at 7:15 pm.

  • Dennis Bodson, W4PWF, Director of the ARRL’s Roanoke Division
  • Philip Zettle, AC4O (Philip joined during the meeting … Welcome Philip!)
  • Ed O’Donnell, KC4NUD

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Jim, W4JTP reminded the Membership that the Club’s next meeting will be held on Friday, June 26th at the Club’s Field Day ’09 location atBurke Lake.  It will be a time for Members to set up for the weekend's operation.
  • Tom, K4TCM advised that he will have rotisserie chicken, various vegetables, a fruit salad and many other healthy foods available on Friday, June 26th at the Club’s Field Day ’09 location at Burke Lake.
  • Pete, K6BFA reminded the Membership about the upcoming CQ VHF Contest that will be held during the 2nd week in July.  The Club will have a 2 meter and a 6 meter rig available for the contest as well as one HF rig, just for the fun of it.  More announcements as we get closer to the contest.
  • Pete, K6BFA asked the Members to bring him a blank QSL card for his display poster which he exhibited during the meeting.  Members are to note the first year of their licensing on the QSL card.  This poster will make a fine display in the Club’s GOTA tent at Field Day as well as during other public functions.
  • Kerry, WA4BQM announced that the latest issue of the Club’s technical journal Leading Edge was being readied for publication and should be available to Members within the very near future.  
  • Kerry, WA4BQM announced that he and Corky, AF4PM have been in contact by way of Olivia, with Tom, N4ZPT who is in Arizona.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION:

 

  • Dennis Bodson, W4PWF, Director of the ARRL’s Roanoke Division, made a formal presentation on behalf of the ARRL to VWS Member Byron, W4SSY for having authored the most popular article in the March 2009 issue of QST.  Dennis presented Byron with a handsome plaque.
  • Immediately following the Award Presentation, Dennis Bodson, W4PWF updated the Membership on the latest FCC and ARRL news.  He noted that the League had updated its website to facilitate easier navigation through its many pages of available information.  He also noted that the website of the ARRL’s Roanoke Division had recently been upgraded.  He asked Members who might have knowledge of how the Roanoke Division received its name to advise him accordingly.  Finally, Dennis asked for the Members’ continued support in his upcoming reelection for the position of Director of the ARRL’s Roanoke Division.

 BREAK:

 

  • Refreshments and gastro-intestinal delight was provided by Bob, WB4KLJ.

MEETING PRESENTATION – AUCTION:

 

  • The Club auctioned of the amateur radio gear of Silent Key, Dick Rucker, KM4ML on behalf of his family.  Auctioneer Mike, AE4R, assisted by presenter Dennis, WA4QMS and collector Pete, KG4OJT sold most of the inventoried items to an enthusiastic Membership.  A few remaining items that came into inventory late and that had not yet been listed, were slated to be sold at the VWS table at the June 14 Manassas Hamfest.
