It was a lovely, brisk evening for our meeting filled with tidings of budget and joy which began at 7:37 pm by our President, Jim W4JTP.
The meeting began with a “Memoriam” for two members who have passed away this year: Len Hook KG6ZR (former VWS Secretary); and, Bill Kamm KC4VXH. A moment of silence was observed.
ATTENDANCE: 37 Members + Invited Spouses & Friends
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. Pete KG4OJT, our Treasurer, passed around our 2008 budget and explained each item. The budget was approved 100% by all members. He also stated that NAQP is set for January 19-20, 2008 at Camp Highroad (near Middleburg, VA). Jane Nelson has agreed to provide catering. The cost of lunch is $9 and the cost of dinner is $11.
Pete also passed around a sheet to members to verify the accuracy of their information to be printed in our 2008 VWS Directory of Members’ pamphlet. He also mentioned that there is now a slot to provide your cell phone number if you wish (optional).
2. Dennis WA4QMS, our VP and Winterfest Boss, reported that we had 77 tables sold, including those for VWS use. Further action is to contact people to volunteer for sales and to also promote Winterfest to other clubs we belong to. He stated that there are no free tables! The exception is if there is a trade-off where another club gives us a free table at their event, then we’ll reciprocate.
He also announced that we need a lot more volunteers to help with the club tables, consignment table work, lock-up, security, parking, set-up and takedown, rentals, tickets, tailgating and VE testing. Even if you can’t volunteer for the entire day, just an hour or so would be great. Or, to help be temporary relief for someone who might need a short break.
The jobs we still need volunteers for the most are security, set-up and takedown. Dennis also declared that if you’re not part of the volunteer staff, then you have to pay to get in, even if you are a VWS member!
3. Sheila KI4WKY, our Secretary, said that this was the “last chance” to provide your birthday on the sign-in sheet to be part of the “Birthday Surprise Program” in 2008. This information is optional. She also said that John AF4PD wanted her to start asking for member’s cell-phone numbers on the sign-in sheet, as he has been accumulating a list for a few weeks.
Then she asked for one or two volunteers to do a presentation to Boy Scout Troop 889 in Fairfax, VA who are working on their Communication Badge. They meet every Monday at 7:00 pm in the First Presbyterian Church in Fairfax. If you are interested, let her know and she’ll provide the contact information and further details.
4. John AF4PD, with sadness, informed everyone that fellow member Allan KO4ALA ‘s , cancer had returned and that a tumor has been detected on his lung. He suggested that it would be nice if members gave Alan a call or visited (calling beforehand).
5. Terry N4ZH is now doing QSL cards and told members that he needed to know their ARRL # and expiration date.
6. The club awarded Tom K4TCM, Member of the Year, which they aptly titled the “Iron Skillet Award” for all his time and hard work cooking for us at many of our activities.
REFRESHMENTS = PARTY-ON!
This was a potluck where all the members were asked to bring various goodies to eat. And, they did! In fact, it was the most important thing on many minds. Ha! We had items ranging from meats, cheeses, sandwiches, crackers, chips and dips to some very nice hor’dourves and appetizers. And, we did not have an abundance of cupcakes. Yeah! We did have a wonderful variety of sweets. Everyone did a great job of supplying something to eat, as well as drinks, plates, napkins and all the other necessaries. I don’t think anyone left the meeting hungry.
PRESENTATION:
Members were asked to bring something for “Show n’ Tell.” We had many members bring items of interest and it was not only educational, but fun too.
IN CONCLUSION…
This was our last meeting for 2007. All members are wished a very Merry Christmas experience as well as Happy Hanukkah and Happy Kwanzaa. And that in 2008 they will be blessed with good propagation, a clear signal and get a lot of new contacts on the air.
