Vienna Wireless Society Friday, November 9, 2007

Once again, it was a dark and rainy night. Our faithful turkey gobbler was heard calling the meeting to order by our President, Jim W4JTP at 7:40 pm.

He began by asking all the veterans to raise their hands and we all thanked them (via clapping) for their service in recognition of Veteran’s Day, this Sunday.

ATTENDANCE: 39

We had no new visitors.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. Sheila KI4WKY, our Secretary, read the minutes from last week’s meeting very quickly because everyone was anxious to get on with the elections! She also announced the “Birthday Surprise” project for 2008 and then passed around the sign-up sheet, which asks for your birthday.

2. John K4KPK was thanked for bringing the goodies and munchies for the evening.

3. Dennis WA4QMS, our Veep, reminded everyone that our next meeting on December 14 is a BYOT (Bring Your Own Treats) Christmas Meeting. Cupcakes were discouraged. Hor'dourves and appetizers were fine. But he warned that it’s best to like what you bring, because if anything is left over, you take it home!

4. Dennis, WA4QMS also updated us on our Winterfest status, stating that he got back verification that we are a sanctioned club in the QST Hamfest Calendar now. He also spoke with vendors to see if they want to keep their old spots or have new ones by the door. (Most want their old spots that they’re accustomed to.) Follow-up phone calls will be done.

He then said that load-in help from kids was needed, as well as volunteers for break down, ticket sales, book sales, table sales, parking, lots, tailgating, etc. A suggestion to get a sign-up sheet for Winterfest volunteering on our Website was made also.

5. Pete KG4OJT, our Treasurer, had no new report. He did say that Mel KI4WKZ had a dozen 30’ RF 50 ohm cables to donate to the club either for members to buy or to sell at Winterfest. And, the balloon patches for our VWS-5 Balloon Project coming up were for sale, with some of them being given to the kids and members who are participating in the balloon project. If you didn’t want to buy one, donations were asked to help pay for the balloon project expenses.

6. Our previous Secretary, Len KG6ZR, did QSL cards. Due to his ill health, Terry N4ZH has volunteered to take over that job.

7. Gary KI4EKM gave away some Aviation magazines. And he asked to talk to the person who purchased the HP Signal Generator from the Summitt Auction (parts needed).

8. Mike AE4R, also mentioned that our December 14 Christmas meeting will be a Show n’ Tell time also.

REPEATER REPORTS:

1. John AF4PD reported that T-MARC (The Mid-Atlantic Repeater Council), after being inactive for 2 years, is going to have a meeting in February 2008, get new officers/directors, set up some action items and become more responsible for setting up the repeater frequency co-ordination in the area.

2. John also said there was a meeting of our Repeater Technical Group that discussed problems and solutions with our 2 M repeater (noise sources and how to solve it). He also announced they had an extra 2 M machine. And, he mentioned the linking of the 440 machine to the 2 M repeater, control receivers and remote receivers.

3. Dan KO1D reported about our 6 M repeater located in Ashburn, VA (53.61 offset down 1 MHz, tone 67 Hz) was operating. He asked members to try it, test it, and let him know what happens, as he needs to know the coverage and how things sound.

ELECTIONS:

Candidates to the board were announced and each one stood up and shared a little about themselves and how they planned to help the club. The candidates were:

(Alphabetically)

Tom Azlin N4ZPT

Mel Clarke KI4WKY

Frank Haynes W4NUA

Tom Martindale K4TCM

Jim Richey AG4MA

Bernie Wimmers N4JDF

We had 3 open positions on our board. The top 3 winners were:

Jim, Bernie and Tom.

Welcome to the 2008 VWS Board guys!

PRESENTATION:

Mike K3MT did a presentation called “What Is A Balun?” and visually drew the balun schematics explaining how they relate to the actual baluns he passed around.

REFRESHMENTS:

John K4KTK brought us all wonderful things to eat. And, since our next meeting is a BYOT, we didn’t have to beg someone to feed us next time!

The meeting concluded by wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels (if doing so) because there would be no meeting on November 23 due to the holiday.
